Movement Drill: Box Progression

Most experienced goalies may know the Box Drill Progression as one of their first goaltending memories. It can be performed using several movements: shuffles, t-pushes, butterfly slides and recoveries (starting from knees). In this short video, we see Chase Perry of RPI University demonstrate two variations.

Peter Samargia's Attitude Goaltending demonstrates a basic movement drill for hockey goalies of all ages.

Our Coaching Philosophy:

No two goalies are the same, so don’t treat them the same. The points of emphasis below are to be used as reminders and sound bites of encouragement to reinforce proper technique.

Coaching Emphasis:

  • Square shoulders throughout movement

  • Clear-purposeful pivots

  • Note concise footwork; no wasted movement. Feet are set at corners of box between momentum shifts.

Progressions:

  • Add shots to movement drills to reinforce points of emphasis

  • Advanced goaltenders can progress to a butterfly slide (emphasize upper body control throughout slides and pivots)
